Case study

CASE STUDY 3

Plastics company specialising in vacuum-formed and polyurethane moulded components for the luxury automotive, construction and agricultural, packaging industries and the Ministry of Defence.

The Company currently employs 35 people and has always invested in achieving and maintaining recognised accreditations to allow it to strategically target and secure growing accounts. The company has T5169~9 and 1501 ~001, and strives for Continuous Improvement through all aspects of the business.

Its Business Director said that the recession has forced the Company to look for other opportunities away from their traditional business sector with the need to diversify from automotive customers. They have found that their business management attitude, driven from their accreditations, has led to many new customers. With more and more new customers visiting the manufacturing facility, they made sure that their first visual impression of the company was exceptional.

Business Need: To instill a culture of continued discipline into the shop floor activities and ensure that tidiness and quality of output are interlinked.

The Delivery : Six shop floor employees have undergone BIT NVQ Level 2 training facilitated by trainers from Consulting Principles including supervisors and operators.

Outcomes :  Workspace improvements have been made and problem-solving activities tackled ‘live’ quality issues, which have contributed to the Company’s continuous improvement ethic. Even when the project was only half way through the BlT NVQs, the factory had already changed significantly with plans already to take the rest of the shop floor through their BIT NVQs.

The National Skills Academy for Process Industries was working within the Cogent Compact programme to support the access to further funding for this. The Skills Academy said: “It is very pleasing to see from an enquiry and company visit that the company is now gaining the full benefits of Continuous Improvement activity, whilst the staff gain the knowledge and understanding and achieve a recognised qualification”

Consulting Principles said: 'The success of the BIT NVQ initiative is due to everyone wanting to implement change which includes the Directors. They have been involved and set the example for the rest of the company. It is essential for senior management to demonstrate that they want change."
